The president of the Port Authority participated today in the XVII edition of the Customs Forum, which is held in Burgos, to explain the advantages that the companies of Castilla y León would have for the integration of the port of Santander into their logistics chains.

The need to integrate the port into the logistics chains of supply and distribution to improve the competitiveness of the companies of Castilla y León is the fundamental point of the intervention he made today at the Customs Forum, held in Burgos, the president of the Port Authority of Santander. In his presentation, entitled "The port of Santander for the future of Castile", González bet on the creation of efficient logistics chains in which the port provides a provision of services that serve to increase the competitiveness of companies in international markets.

Among the advantages of including the port in these logistics chains, the PRESIDENT of the APS highlighted the improvement of maritime and land accessibility through the development of logistics and intermodality and the increase of operational capacity thanks to the specialized terminals available to the port infrastructure.

Jaime González also exposed the "privileged" strategic situation that Burgos has as important communication axes such as Catalonia-Galicia, Morocco-European Union, Burgos-Santander-Bilbao and Burgos-Lisbon-Oporto converge in the area which allows him to meet the needs of supply and distribution in a "vast" area. González noted that Burgos also has enough assets to value its industry and, this, "coupled with the logistic feasibility for the supply of raw materials and distribution of the finished product – in what would have an important role the port – "are the main characteristics that a territory must have to be chosen by a large corporation when it comes to being installed.

González reviewed the main technical characteristics of the port of Santander as a "marine-port logistics services factory" and reiterated its importance in the weight of the Cantabrian economy as it accounts for 10.56% of GDP and 9.6% of the employment of the Autonomous Community. The president of the port also referred to the sharp increase in traffic experienced by the Cantabrian dock in recent years, especially the current year, since, between January and September, growth is 14.1%.

On the other hand, and referring to a possible soft Brexit agreement, the port's head was most important to trade with the UNITED Kingdom through the port of Santander with particular emphasis on Brittany Ferries traffic. In this regard, González noted that 21% of the port's traffic, both passenger and freight, is with the United Kingdom "especially automobiles and industrial products and for large distribution".This makes Santander, according to the president of the APS, "a main gateway between Spain and the United Kingdom".

The inauguration of the XVII Customs Forum, which took place yesterday at the Teatro Principal de Burgos, was attended by the President of Cantabria, Miguel Angel Revilla, who reviewed the good situation that crosses the port of Santander and its main projects and invited those present to "use" this infrastructure, because it is, historically, "the natural port of Castile".

The welcome event was also attended, in addition to the participants in the Forum, various authorities such as the mayor of Burgos, Daniel De la Rosa, with several of his councillors; Roberto Saiz, territorial delegate of the Junta de Castilla y León in Burgos; Gonzalo Ansótegui, director of the Burgos Transport Center; Alberto Gómez, rector of Isabel I University or the president of the port of Santander, Jaime González.
