Port traffic rebounds in October and improves 2022 closing forecast
With almost 663 thousand tons operated by the port of Santander, last month becomes the second best October in the history of the Cantabrian infrastructure after the record recorded in 2019.
The president of the Port Authority, Francisco Martin, has pointed out that, although "possibly" we will close the year in negative, it will be "a very good result" since "we must not forget that we compare ourselves with 2021, the best exercise in the history of the port".
Santander 07-11-22. With 662,960 tons, last month has become the second best October in the history of the port compared to the 670,848 tons recorded in 2019. With this result, the cumulative January-October has reached 5,342,227 tons in 2022, 3.5% less than in the same period last year.
The president of the APS, Francisco Martin, explained that "possibly" this percentage "will improve at the end of the year" since the last months are "traditionally" quite good. In addition, he has stated that this traffic result is "very satisfactory" since "we are comparing ourselves with 2021", the best year in the history of the port and, "although we cannot beat this record, we will end the year as one of the three best".
"The health and economic crisis, the arrival of Brexit, the news about the increase in freight rates or the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine have not allowed us to exceed the figures of 2021", a challenge that was "difficult" but that we faced "with illusion". However, this year we have given a "very strong impulse" to our infrastructures and "we are ready to try to surpass it in 2023", added the president of the Port Authority.
Of the total traffic obtained in the month of October, 404,918 tons have been of solid bulk, 12,009 of liquid bulk and 246,033 of general cargo, representing an increase of 7.2% over the same month of 2021.
Of the 5,342,227 tons reached during the first ten months of the year, 2,794,042 correspond to solid bulks, 205,505 to liquid bulks and 2,342,680 to general cargo.
Within the general cargo, which represents 43.9 % of the goods moved through the port, the positive performance of products such as machinery stands out. On the other hand, cereals, fertilizers or iron and steel products stand out in solid bulk and molasses in liquid bulk.
