Martín visits the construction works of the new ferry terminal together with the president of Brittany Ferries.
The president of the Port Authority of Santander has highlighted the "investment effort" of the APS and has pointed out that the new ferry terminal, which includes the LNG supply station and the construction of the Maliaño pier in its sections 1 to 4, are essential to receive in 2023 the new ships of Brittany Ferries.
Santander 19-01-22. The president of the Port Authority, Francisco Martín, has assured today that the works for the construction of the new ferry terminal "are on schedule" and that "if there are no unforeseen events" the APS "will fulfill its commitment to have it ready for 2023". For Martin, the works, which include an LNG supply station and the construction of the Maliaño dock in its sections 1 to 4, are "absolutely necessary" to ensure the supply of LNG to new ships, cope with the increase in the size of ships and improve the urban integration of the port.
The president of the APS, who has visited the progress of the works together with Jean Marc Roué and Christophe Mathieu, president and CEO of Brittany Ferries respectively, has stressed that with this milestone "we are witnessing the transformation of the port and making it much more competitive, in addition to improving the views of the neighbors who walk along Antonio Lopez, as we will demolish the rest of the ships of Maliaño".
At the moment, the vessel Salamanca is in Santander, the first LNG ferry to arrive at the port and twin of the vessel Santoña, which is the one that will operate the Santander lines, both from the French company.
Maliaño wharf, sections 1-4.
The work, with a budget of 19 million euros, is scheduled for completion in March 2023. Among the next milestones, on February 1, the demolition of the rest of the Maliaño warehouses will begin for an amount of 500,000 euros and an execution period of 5 months and, in October of this year, the urbanization of the ferry terminal parking lot will begin for an amount of 2 million euros and an execution period of 6 months.
In addition, in the next few days will begin the piling works of the new deck of the future dock on the heel side where the new ro-ro ramp will be located.
With this action, a berthing length of 375 m and 8 m draught will be recovered, with the possibility of increasing it up to 9.5 m by dredging, should it be necessary in the future.
The dock will allow the berthing of ro-ro cargo ships and ro-pax ships (ferries), and occasionally also cruise ships.
The work will allow the transfer of regular ferry lines to the new pier of Maliaño's section 1-4, freeing up the block pier and the maritime station for the berthing of cruise ships. The new infrastructure can also be used for the berthing of small inactive vessels at its southern end.
LNG Bunker Station
The consortium formed by the Port of Santander, Repsol LNG Holding, (RLH), ESK and Enagás has started the construction of an LNG supply facility whose works are expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
It should be recalled that on May 26, 2020, the Port Authority granted a concession to Repsol LNG Holding S.A. to occupy an area of 4,902 m2 on the Maliaño quay for the construction and operation of an LNG supply station for ships, for the exclusive private use of the concessionaire. The investment budget amounts to 10 million euros and the concession term is 15 years.
The new facility is designed to load Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel for Ferry type vessels, which have a storage capacity of up to 1,000 m3. The facility is flexible enough to be able to supply other types of ships. It also has the necessary elements to allow future expansions to adapt to future LNG demands.
This action also has a European aid within the CEF-Transport program, specifically in the call Projects on the Comprehensive Network (CEF-T-2019-1-AP-TRANSPORT) / Maritime Ports and is part of the LNGhive2 strategy promoted by Puertos del Estado.
