Santander 21-11-22. Correos and the Port of Santander have presented today the stamp that, within the series Efemérides, commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the Port of Santander. The president of the Port Authority of Santander, Francisco Martín; the delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Ainoa Quiñones; the counselor of industry, Tourism, Innovation, Transport and Commerce and vice-president of the APS, Francisco Javier López Marcano and the director of Institutional Relations and Philately, Leire Díez Castro, have carried out the presentation that has taken place in the auditorium of the Documentation Center of the Port Authority of the Cantabrian capital.
After the presentation, Leire Díez invited the institutional representatives to make the honorary postmark of this commemorative stamp. The 150th anniversary of the Port of Santander becomes part of the world of philately with an issue that was put into circulation on October 28th.
The stamp reproduces the logo created for the anniversary. It features a modern illustration of the centenary stone crane, one of the most valued and identifying assets of the port, especially for the people of Santander and has become one of the most beloved emblems of the city.
This design is intended to symbolize the past, present and future, taking a look at a centenary piece, but full of color and modernist touches, keeping the future in mind. This crane was designed by Sheldon and Gertden in 1896. It was inaugurated on May 17, 1900 and its price was 73,820 pesetas of the time. It was powered by a steam engine that years later would be replaced by an electric motor. In its first tests, it lifted up to 36 tons and remained in service until the 90's of the last century.
This apparatus represents the 150 years of history of the port since, with the passing of time, it has undergone changes and evolved according to its needs.
On Friday, May 10, 1872, the decree was published by which the Ministry of Development authorized the creation of a special board, which is called the port works. With this, it is intended to promote the works of the same, as well as its execution and administration.
The Bay of Santander on the Cantabrian coast has some special features that make it special. The flow of several rivers and the estuaries that converge on its banks have facilitated maritime transport since time immemorial.
